Until only recently, the ability for most people to use professional teachers was limited to the rich and elite classes.
So throughout most of history, the early education of the children was done by the parents. Once the children were older, they might be allowed to pursue further education as an apprentice in a specific trade.
It wasn't until the late 17th century that the idea that education should be mandatory was introduced. The early stages of this mandatory or compulsory education were started in Germany. The idea transformed into what we know as primary classroom training around the middle of the 19th century.
